For Immediate Release – April 16, 2010
HANTS COUNTY, NS – During a visit to the Hants Shore Community Health Centre outside of Halifax, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff committed to attract more doctors, nurses and nurse practitioners to underserved rural communities by forgiving up to $20,000 of their student debt.
“All Canadians should have a high quality of life and comparable levels of service, regardless of where they live,” said Mr. Ignatieff. “Too many rural families have to drive for hours to access health services for their loved ones – and that’s just not right.” Read on »

Three years less a day after Prime Minister Stephen Harper stood beside Bill Gates and pledged $111-million toward the search for an AIDS vaccine, the federal government has officially cancelled the centrepiece project of that partnership, saying a manufacturing plant is no longer needed and Canadian researchers were not up to the job anyway. Where have all the policy-makers gone?
Posted by sitemaster in Energy, Environment, Foreign Policy, Health Care, Science & Technology, The Economy on February 17, 2010
David Mitchell, The Globe and Mail, Published on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010
Think hard: What were the policy and governance highlights of the past decade? It’s a short list. Our federal government avoided the military intervention in Iraq, joined the war effort in Afghanistan and, largely in reaction to the sponsorship scandal in Quebec, was preoccupied by the internal processes of accountability.
In fact, pro-active policy-making within government has atrophied. Read on »
The search for isotope answers
Posted by sitemaster in Conservatives, Health Care, Science & Technology on February 14, 2010
From The Toronto Star, February 14, 2010
Canadians have lost their capacity for shock or anger over breakdowns, malfunctions and missed deadlines at the Chalk River nuclear facility, the country’s primary supplier of medical isotopes. The latest delay – the aging reactor will not resume production in March, as promised – might have escaped public notice if the Dutch had not announced the closing of their own reactor. Read on »
Don’t ignore reproductive rights

BY ELIZABETH PAYNE, THE OTTAWA CITIZEN – FEBRUARY 11, 2010
This government can’t talk about improving global maternal health without talking about access to contraception and abortion
What Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff said about women’s reproductive rights and abortion last week would be considered neither new nor controversial in most G8 countries. Or in this one, a few years ago. That it is creating a windstorm of controversy in Canada in 2010 speaks volumes about how polarized our politics have become. Read on »

Before calling Mr. Ignatieff ignorant, I suggest that Jennifer Cowan might inform herself more fully on the topic of abortion in developing countries. (Herstory, Feb. 6) (Click here to read the original post)
Last week, Michael Ignatieff urged Prime Minister Stephen Harper not to exclude abortion and contraception from his plan to become an international champion of women’s and children’s health by following the lead of the United States, which has cut funding to some aid organizations that promote the use of contraceptives and abortion. Britt nursing station a no-go for stimulus funding
Posted by sitemaster in Health Care on February 3, 2010
By Sarah Bissonette, CottageCountryNow.ca February 3, 2010
BRITT – There’s no stimulus funding to help replace Britt’s antique nursing station.
Working to build a new, centrally-located 2,500-square-foot nursing station, the Britt and Area Nursing Services Committee applied for $500,000 in stimulus funding last year: $250,000 from the province and $250,000 from Canada. The notice of denial was received in early December. With what would have been the community’s $250,000 portion pretty much wrapped up, through donations, in-kind contributions and pledges, construction would have started in the spring. Read on »
