For the Harper Conservatives, it seems possible to talk about maternal health care without mentioning the word abortion. Such a black and white approach may be appealing to some, but for many people the world is not so simple. Since the Mulroney era, the Government of Canada has recognized that there are occasions when a woman may face this most terrible of decisions. No one takes it lightly. Ten years ago, even Mr. Clement is quoted as saying that “there are some instances where the woman’s right to choose does trump other concerns”. Ten years later, Mr. Clement happily applauds his party’s G8 agenda, while they cut funding to groups who disagree with them. What has made Tony Clement turn toward this hard-right agenda? Are his old Alliance party roots calling to him? Or does this powerful cabinet minister have no voice for Parry Sound-Muskoka that his boss does not give him?
